Tour Overview

This experience is designed for travelers who want to explore Rome beyond its open-air monuments and famous piazzas.

The route begins in Piazza Barberini, near the Fontana del Tritone, before continuing to the Capuchin Crypts beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione. Inside, you will see a series of chapels decorated with the bones of approximately 3,700 Capuchin friars, arranged as a striking reflection on faith, mortality, and monastic tradition.

After the crypts, private transportation takes the group toward the ancient Appian Way, passing important areas such as the Aurelian Walls and views connected to ancient Rome. The experience continues underground at one of Rome’s major catacomb sites: the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, Catacombs of St. Sebastian, or Domitilla Catacombs, depending on the day and site access.

What You’ll Experience

Meet at Piazza Barberini

Your tour begins in central Rome at Piazza Barberini, in front of the Fontana del Tritone.

This meeting point makes the route easy to begin before walking to the nearby Capuchin Crypts.

Capuchin Crypts

A short walk brings you to the Capuchin Crypts beneath Santa Maria della Concezione.

These chapels are lined with the bones of approximately 3,700 friars, arranged in detailed patterns that reflect centuries of Capuchin tradition and religious symbolism.

Private Transport Toward the Appian Way

After the crypts, you will travel by private van toward the catacombs.

Along the way, the route may pass landmarks and historic areas such as the Appian Way, Aurelian Walls, and Circus Maximus, while your guide connects the drive to stories of ancient Rome, early Christianity, and the city’s defenses

The Appian Way

The Appian Way is one of ancient Rome’s most important roads.

As the route continues outside the historic center, you will see how Rome’s burial traditions and early Christian communities developed beyond the city walls.

Roman Catacombs

The underground portion includes a guided visit to one of Rome’s major catacomb sites.

Depending on the day and access, the route may include the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, Catacombs of St. Sebastian, or Domitilla Catacombs.

Early Christian Burial Spaces

Inside the catacombs, your guide leads you through narrow corridors, burial spaces, frescoed chambers, and areas connected to early Christian history.

These tunnels help explain how Christian communities honored martyrs, popes, and the dead while practicing faith in a changing Roman world.

Return to Piazza Barberini

After the catacomb visit, private transportation returns the group to Piazza Barberini.

The tour ends back at the original meeting point, making it easy to continue your time in central Rome.
