Tour Overview

This experience is designed for travelers who want to see St. Peter’s Basilica and climb its famous Dome with a guide.

The tour begins near St. Peter’s Square, where your guide leads the group toward the Basilica. The Dome climb starts with elevator access to the first level, where you can see the elaborate mosaics inside the Dome and step onto the terrace for views across Vatican City.

From there, guests who want the full climb continue up 320 ancient stone steps to the top. The stairway becomes narrow and may feel tight, but the reward is a panoramic view over Vatican City and Rome’s historic center.

Back at ground level, your guide explains the history and meaning of the world’s largest church before you enter the Basilica and see masterpieces including Michelangelo’s La Pietà and Bernini’s Baldacchino.

What You’ll Experience

Meet in St. Peter’s Square

Your tour begins in St. Peter’s Square.

The exact meeting location will be provided in the final meeting details before the tour. Arrive 15 minutes early so the group can check in and enter on time.

Elevator to the First Dome Level

The climb begins with an elevator ride to the first level of St. Peter’s Dome.

At this level, you can admire the Dome’s detailed mosaics up close and step outside onto the terrace for a classic view of Vatican City.

Climb to the Top of the Dome

From the first level, you may continue up 320 ancient stone steps to reach the top.

This final section is narrow and can feel claustrophobic, but it offers wide views over the Vatican, St. Peter’s Square, and Rome’s historic center.

Guided Basilica Explanation

After returning to ground level, your guide shares the history of St. Peter’s Basilica before you enter.

This helps you understand the scale, symbolism, artwork, and importance of the church before exploring inside.

Inside St. Peter’s Basilica

Inside the Basilica, you will see major works such as Michelangelo’s La Pietà and Bernini’s Baldacchino.

Your guide will also point out the high altar, the spectacular throne, and the area built above St. Peter’s final resting place.
